Software Becomes the Vehicle Platform
Manufacturers and suppliers have long aligned their development processes around software platforms. Software forms the foundation of modern vehicle architectures, integrating advanced driver assistance systems, infotainment, energy management and over-the-air updates. At the same time, a new generation of high-performance central computers is replacing the multitude of individual electronic control units. Hardware and software are no longer developed sequentially; they are co-developed from the outset. Virtual development and test environments are now standard. Software is validated before the first prototypes are available. This shortens development times, reduces defects and helps manage the growing complexity of modern vehicle systems.
Competition Takes Place in the Ecosystem
With the SDV, value creation is shifting. Hardware remains indispensable, but differentiation increasingly comes from software. For suppliers, delivering individual components is therefore no longer enough. What is needed are integrated hardware and software solutions, along with expertise in software development, semiconductor technology, cybersecurity, functional safety and artificial intelligence. Companies that master these capabilities evolve from component suppliers into technology partners.
At the same time, the SDV is changing collaboration within the industry. Alongside traditional Tier 1 suppliers, software companies, semiconductor manufacturers, cloud providers and AI specialists are shaping the development of new vehicle platforms. Today, innovation emerges in connected ecosystems in which manufacturers and technology partners share responsibility across company boundaries and jointly develop new solutions.
The Software Defined Vehicle is no longer a topic for the future. It already defines how vehicles are developed and which companies succeed in international competition. Accordingly, the SDV will be one of the defining topics at the International Suppliers Fair (IZB) 2026 in Wolfsburg.
