A supplier’s success is determined not by its size, but by its role in the value chain.
Automotive manufacturers’ procurement strategies are changing fundamentally. Development and delivery scopes are growing, interfaces are being reduced, and responsibility is being consolidated. For many mid-sized suppliers, this raises a strategic question: How does a hidden champion remain visible when OEMs award ever larger work packages?
Germany’s mid-sized industrial sector has been one of the automotive industry’s drivers of innovation for decades. Many key technologies come from companies that rarely make headlines – yet whose innovations are used in vehicles worldwide. Their engineering excellence, reliability and innovative strength remain decisive competitive advantages. But in future, these qualities alone will no longer be enough.
Speed: Fewer Interfaces, More Responsibility
The question used to be: “Which component do I supply?” Today it is: “What responsibility do I assume?” Increasingly, this question determines the role companies will play in the value chain. OEMs are looking for partners capable of taking responsibility for complete functions, systems or development scopes – from development through production readiness. Technological expertise and quality alone are no longer enough. What is needed are companies that can manage complex projects and assume responsibility.
This raises not only the requirements placed on products, but above all those placed on the companies themselves. Companies that assume responsibility become part of larger value-added work packages. Those that supply only individual components risk being perceived primarily as subcontractors in future.
Quality: More Than a Good Product
Not every mid-sized supplier will become a systems partner to major vehicle manufacturers in future. Nor does that need to be the goal. Companies can also remain successful by positioning themselves as indispensable specialists or by offering broader scopes of work together with strong partners.
Companies are responding with different strategies. Some build capabilities in-house; others join forces, enter into strategic partnerships or expand their portfolios through targeted equity investments and acquisitions. Increasingly, the decisive factor is not which capabilities a company possesses on its own – but how convincingly it can assume responsibility in complex value networks.
This is precisely where the strength of many successful hidden champions lies. Their innovative strength, specialisation and focus on quality remain decisive competitive advantages – provided they are combined with strategic development.
Partnership: Networks Become a Success Factor
Tomorrow’s hidden champions will not define themselves by technology alone. What is needed are companies that combine technological excellence with responsibility, networking and collaborative partnership.
Fewer interfaces, more responsibility. More than a good product. Networks become a success factor. Few statements describe the new rules of the automotive industry more aptly. That is precisely why the overarching theme of IZB 2026 is: “Powering Customer Driven Innovation – Speed. Quality. Partnership.”
Road to IZB 2026
With its editorial series “Road to IZB 2026” on OEM&Lieferant, Wolfsburg AG, the organiser of IZB, tracks the key developments in the international automotive and supplier industry in the run-up to the next International Suppliers Fair in Wolfsburg.
At IZB from 27 to 29 October 2026, these topics will not only be discussed but taken forward in collaboration with leading players from across the international automotive industry. Once again, Wolfsburg will become a meeting point for manufacturers, suppliers, technology companies, start-ups and research institutions – and a place where new ideas, partnerships and solutions for tomorrow’s mobility take shape.
The focus is on future technologies, market trends, and the people, companies and innovations shaping the industry’s transformation.
