96 fits well into the current global mobility landscape and its production volume can be gradually increased and used to supplement current fossil fuel consumption. It brings a measurable and immediate CO2 reduction for the existing fleet. In today’s fast-paced world, KST is positioning itself as a highly flexible and specialized service provider in the field of powertrain development processes. E-mobility and related technologies are part of KST’s qualified testing service portfolio, including a full range of hydrogen (engine) system testing. The key competencies are summarized in three basic pillars: E-mobility, hydrogen and conventional powertrain testing. Hydrogen will be an important parameter for electricity storage in future energy systems. We at KST have recognized this important development need and already have 20 % of our test benches ready to support precisely this type of R&D work. In addition to testing the complete system, KST is able to support fuel cell assembly, electrolyzer and stack testing with a specially developed testing infrastructure. The trends in the automotive industry are clearly aimed at e-mobility, which seems to be the future for short and medium distances as well as for transportation in urban areas. There are now also clear trends towards the use of alternative energy sources. The industry’s efforts to develop and implement the use of hydrogen as a fuel are gaining momentum, with KST noting that this not only affects fuel cells, but also hydrogen engines, which almost all engine manufacturers are focusing on making ready for series production. Fuel cell technology does not yet appear to be mature enough for off-road applications and commercial vehicles in particular. In parallel, KST is observing a certain trend towards the development of the use of hydrogen engines in passenger cars. However, this is clearly an issue that presents new challenges that need to be carefully evaluated before new development programs and strategic powertrain solutions can be addressed. The availability and distribution network of energy sources will clearly remain a critical factor for the full range of accessible technologies. Synthetic fuels are seen as increasingly important. While this type of fuel is subject to a complex production cycle, it Trends in the automotive industry and the associated diversity of drive concepts By Prof. Dr. Gerhard Reiff, Chairman of the Executive Board of KST-Motorenversuch GmbH & Co. KG KST is one of the largest independent service providers in Europe for testing combustion engines, electric drives and inverters as well as hydrogen engines and fuel cells, including special tests such as tilt tests, rotor and stator tests, prototype validation, etc. Image: © KST Based on the three main pillars described above – e-mobility, hydrogen and classic powertrain testing – KST is continuously expanding its service portfolio, penetrating profitable niche markets and, above all, supporting global high-end development/ testing needs, true to our motto “Testing Powertrains to move the Future”.
