BorgWarner www.borgwarner.com Share Optimized motor design When working on a new design or improve- ment of a system solution, engineers are confronted with numerous partly conflicting parameters they must take into account for an optimum result, depending on their de- velopment goal. Key factors, for example, are package space or mass. Minimum weight, high mileage, peak performance, compact size, and low cost cannot be achieved si- multaneously. Because bearing in mind just one factor might lead to poor performance of the others, however, system improvement considerations have to be based upon all parameters. In addition to the above criteria other ve- hicle specifications and client needs also play a role in creating a marketable vehicle solution, including its various sub-systems. In order to offer OEMs the best possible application for their customers’ needs BorgWarner has created an optimization algorithm that provides a choice of mod- ular and scalable design options (Figure 2). The solution includes genetic algo- rithms and multi-physics optimization that contribute to meeting technical and finan- cial targets. Research and development based on components and entire system BorgWarner engineers can resort to their specialist knowledge of individual compo- nents as well as understanding the whole vehicle system when they develop drive- trains for various electric vehicle archi- tectures. Their ultimate goal for a new tai- lor-made solution is to balance technical as well as financial criteria.
