96 New products and markets AUVOTs from BASF help display automotive OEM coatings in the digital world By Joerg Zumkley, Global Communications Coatings, BASF Digitalization is advancing rapidly in many sectors. Digital solutions are also needed in the area of automotive OEM coatings. The designers at BASF’s Coatings division have examined digital options to help carmakers visualize automotive coatings on large surfaces in a wide range of shapes. Under the heading AUVOT (Automotive Ve- hicles of Trends), BASF’s design experts have developed their own virtual vehicle models specifically designed to digitally display colors and effects on surfaces. These models aim to enable a realistic impression on an entire ve- hicle from an early stage of development. To do so, they accurately depict the way colors and geometry interact, while also reflecting the way automotive OEM coatings are shown under the influence of light in the digital world. A realistic appearance – from compact to SUV BASF is introducing four different AUVOTs which represent various car segments on the automotive market. Each of the shapes represents distinct automotive features that reveal effect highlights on the edges, show- casing dramatic flop behavior at the same time. While one side of the automotive ge- ometry shows various elements typical of the automotive segment, the other side features spectacular unreal formations that reveal the potential of automotive coating and give surprising insights on the behavior of a color. These two different sides help automotive manufacturers to understand the influence of colors in industrial design. “To visualize and display all elements relevant to coatings – such as the color itself, the ef- fect and the surface – is already challenging in the real world and requires deep knowledge. Translating this knowledge into the virtual world and bridging those two worlds opens a new field of work. Our mission was the techni- cally correct and primary realistic appearance of paint as well as a persuasive portrayal of a color concept on the right shape,” said Florina Trost, Senior Designer Automotive OEM Coat- ings Solutions EMEA at BASF.
